Zombies, Botnets, Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware and Rootkits are all very much in existence and pose a very clear and present danger to the security of established networks. Even the best protected systems can be breached by an employee inadvertently downloading an application from a website or opening a funny email with a PPT attached. The UK has more computers infected with spyware than any other country in the European Union. Forty of the companies surveyed admitted they had suffered a serious security breach resulting from spyware on their machines. In the consumer market, 89 per cent of PCs were found to contain spyware.

PDA and Laptop losses

With most companies utilising the internet for business critical systems and individual users using their computers for bank payments etc. the data stored on laptops, desktops and PDA’s is to all intense purposes a mirror image of a person’s life style. A staggering 81% of US firms lost at least one laptop containing sensitive data, unfortunately there is no data for this type of loss in the UK.

Directors feel Exposed

A recent survey conducted by SafeNet found that 80 per cent of IT directors do not have full confidence in their security systems, and 39 per cent are most concerned about unauthorized access to systems by outsiders.
